CCAE material

On June 16, 2003, I participated in a panel discussion at the annual conference of The Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education. The event was held at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

Participants for the panel discussion included Akin; Peter Calamai, Science Reporter, Toronto Star; Penny Park, Executive Producer, Daily Planet, Discovery Channel; and Tom Spears, Science Reporter, Ottawa Citizen.

Marcia Daniel, senior media relations officer at the University of Western Ontario acted as moderator.

We were asked to discuss the following items, under the theme Media Matters.

  • What is the media looking for when it comes to covering higher education?
  • Is the profile of universities in Canada high or could it be higher?
  • What do media think University PR departments do well and not so well?
  • How can universities secure more coverage of university research?

The materials for my presenation include two items:

  1. A slide presentation.
  2. One Journalist's Perspective: How media friendly are the Web sites of Canada's universities? Western, Queen's, UVic, and UBC top the list. Find out who needs more work here.
